Day 3 of testing

Well, things have gone pretty good so far this week! I had another shot in the arm yesterday (they used the other arm, thank goodness) and both days, it sure made my arm sore. Oh, well! :) Today, I took a 4 millicurri (sp?) radioactive iodine pill and now, nothing until tomorrow. Tomorrow's the lab work and then Friday is the body scan and then LUNCH AT OLIVE GARDEN!!!! :o) I've been on this low iodine diet for 16 days and as of 20 minutes ago, I've lost 18 pounds. I KNOW!! Yike-a-roonies!! Well, at least I know that I'll put 7 back on just from Olive Garden alone. Ha! :D

I asked the the big city's hospital's lab how long it would take to get my lab results and they didn't seem too confident about their answer. They said it would take a week to get the results. I made it back home today, though (we got a snowstorm last night that closed all the roads through the night and morning), so we'll see if my good 'ol small town hospital can get them, to me quicker. The big city's hospital told me I wasn't even allowed to pick up my results from them but that I had to get them from the doctor. I'm glad that my small town hospital lets me pick them up.

All for now! I'm going to head into work for a bit and then just R&R. I'm just not feeling the best since I swallowed that pill this morning and the yucky feeling kind of comes and goes. I think my stomach is protesting and saying, "QUIT swallowing those pills!!!!" That sounds like a good idea to me! Ha...I wish!! :)

Day 1 of testing

I started the testing process today!! Things didn't go as smoothly as I had hoped, but we got through it. I checked in at the hospital and then went directly to the radiography department. After a 25 minute wait for the medicine to arrive from Pharmacy, I finally was called back and they administered the shot. The shot is Thyrogen and it will make my TSH (thyroid stimulatin hormone) levels rise to where they're supposed to be for the testing but I don't ever have to go off of my thyroid medicine! Yay! (This is a wonderful thing!!!!) Tomorrow morning, we'll repeat the process and then Wednesday I'll take the radioactive iodine pill for the blooddraw on Thursday and then my body scan on Friday. It'll be a busy week! To top it off, Mother Nature has decided to move in for the next few days with a nice dose of SNOW!!! So...I am not going to be driving back and forth like I planned (I have to go to a nearby city for all of my tests...a 45 minute drive that can be very treacherous in bad weather) and instead, I will spend the day in the city running a bunch of errands and getting a few things accomplished. I cannot miss my Wednesday appointment because it's a $9,000 appointment with specific medicines designed just for me!! If I miss the appointment, I still pay for the drug. Not to mention that we have to start this entire process over! Yuck!

So, there's your update for the day! I don't know if I'll update before Thursday, but I'm hoping to have the Thursday lab results within a day (if not earlier), so as soon as I get those results, I'll post something. I'm not a doctor, but depending on the number comes back from the bloodwork, I'll have a pretty good idea if it's good news or bad news. So...keep your fingers crossed that we get LOW numbers and good results!! :o)

School's Out!

I took my last final last night and submitted my final paper to another class yesterday afternoon, so I'm done with classes now! Wahoo! Well, I'm done for two weeks, anyway. I start two online classes on the 17th and then a month later, I'll start an additional two. Whew...it'll be a busy summer! I'm so glad to be done!! In fact, I was so wound up about it that I didn't go to bed until 1 this morning. Yikes. I'm paying for it today!

Another another note, why is it that smoke alarm batteries always decide to die at the worst possible moment? Last night, at 10:30 PM, my smoke alarm in my living room started chirping. I called a friend to see if she had a 9V battery, but she didn't. I searched ALL through my house, hoping to find one, but I couldn't. So, off I went to the grocery store! :( I don't know how most smoke alarms are, but ours are hard wired to run, so even if you take the battery out, it will still chirp at you. I needed that new battery!

The diet is going so-so. I've cheated on it more than I have wanted to and today I'm feeling bad about it. I had a small one-inch by one-inch treat this morning that consisted of chocolate, butterscotch & white chocolate chips, coconut, a gooey, syrupy "stick it together" mix, and a graham crackery bottom. I know it's not a lot, but add it to the accidental chef salad incident earlier this week and I do get to feeling concerned! I take "the pill" next Wednesday, so that's the point at which I really DO need to be cleared out so that any cancer cells that might exist could be starving for iodine and then pick up the pill's contents first.

So...wish me luck on staying faithful to my diet and I wish YOU the best of luck on your diet (IF you're even doing anything!!!). :o)

I'm not broken anymore.

Well, thankfully, I'm not broken anymore!! The weird taste disappeared between last night and today's breakfast. However, we have a new problem...I'm officially sick of egg whites and hashbrowns.

I'm in a real pickle. This means that I might have to cook something! Grrr... I hate cooking! It just makes me crabby. I think even more so, too, since I'm so limited in what I can cook, you know.

Oh, woe is me.

I think I'm broken.

So, I'm on day 7 of this low-iodine diet and something odd is happening. I've developed a taste bud (or something!) on the right side of my mouth that makes everything have a VERY odd flavor to it. It's like a very brief gross taste that pops in for a second. Blech. What is going on?!?! Am I broken? Is this "the end" for me? I had some white grape juice with supper last night and that's when I noticed the weird flavor and it hasn't left. The "weird flavor" only appears when I eat something. Anybody have any ideas? If not, then I might have to go back to regular eating!!! Ha! I wish.

Low Iodine Diet: Day 6

Another day with a cold...another day of just lying around. :(

Breakfast: slept through it

Lunch: Pears

Supper: eggs & hashbrowns again! And, no, I'm not sick of them yet! :)

So...I've posted six days of this "lovely" diet for you all to see and I have 11 1/2 more days to go. I might post the meal plan SOME days, but probably not every day. You get the gist of how my life is going and 11 more days of having you see what I eat just seems kind of lame. :) One thing I've already decided...when I have my body scan on Friday, May 14, at 2 PM, I am going to promptly go out to eat at Olive Garden once it's over! YUM!! :o)

Low Iodine Diet: Day 5

Breakfast: Slept through it.

Lunch: Ended up sleeping through that, too.

Afternoon snack: popcorn and some sprite

Supper: egg whites & hashbrowns & juice -- This has been SO tasty!! :)

I know it seems rather lame that I slept all day long, but I am still battling this cold. I was going to be the only person in the office yesterday afternoon, so I was there when I probably should have been at home sleeping! :( So...I think that I took a step or two backwards in the improvement department. I hate colds. I really do. You just feel so crummy but even though you sleep a lot, you just feel lik you're not getting better because you really can't sleep very well, either, because you just can't breathe. It's miserable!

Anyway, I had to skip out on a potluck/hymn sing last night and now tonight, I'm missing out on Corbin's 2nd birthday party! :o( I'm already planning to lay low tomorrow, too, but hopefully something changes soon...I'm getting tired of this cold! :) Hope that YOU are feeling well!! :)
