I am slightly depressed today. Why? Well, I was frustrated with my computer the other night and the whole event led me to searching some online sites for computers and doing some price checking. I don't think I've recovered from the shock yet. Do you know that laptops are around the same price as desktops anymore!?! WOW! I couldn't believe that! I priced out a few computers before deciding that I had just learned more than I ever wanted to know and I've been working at not feeling blue about the whole ordeal. :) hahaha...just kidding, of course. But I was surprised at sticker prices! Wow!
But what do YOU prefer? Do you like laptops or desktops? I've got a desktop set up right now and it's served me well. I really have no desperate desire to have a laptop, but they are a lot smaller and might work better for me. However, I wouldn't necessarily ever travel with it, so I'm not sure that it's necessary. But what's your opinion. For those of you that look at this blog, what do you like? Do you like laptops more than desktops? Do you think that I'm way outdated if I only have a desktop set up? Speak to me!! :o)

well, it's proly no surprise that I stick to a laptop... given a house and no limit of $$, I'd have both lol
The thing is, you don't think you'd travel with a laptop... until you have one (I used to think that)- now, literally everything is centered around stuff on this puppy- my concordance, even (it's also on my smaller handheld, since even the laptop is too heavy to be taking on buses and trains all the time) but all my correspondence, all my addresses/contact info, e-books, various lists of 'stuff'- my whole life is now organized around this thing... A PC, though, is quite quite nice! So, if you haven't started using a laptop, you'd proly be happy without one; I'd bet, though, that once you had one, you'd be very happy to keep it! And yes, the pricing is a bit phenomenol. Dell is currently offering a 'test this Dell laptop and we'll give it to you' program; you should look into something like that! Also, my Trude friend went online and did a 'build your own Dell' for a lot cheaper and tailor-made for her... there are options out there. And shopping around on e-bay, various online distributors- you can get really good deals. That's the way to get a laptop.
this all in my *humble* opinion ;-P
Love love love me a laptop!! Right now you can get them for about $500 base price. BUT it may contribute to my laziness. You see, once you sit down with one on your lap they become VERY HEAVY and its hard to get up again. HA (just so nothing gets lost in cyber translation, I'm making excuses for my tendancy to spend too much time on my computer!)
I'm quite happy with my PC for home, unless I had a "large" one, I wouldn't trade, but I'm wanting a laptop terribly for travel. It would also be nice to have a 2nd computer at home (for when my kids are on it...) and I don't want two big ones sitting there!
I'm not sure that I've left a message on your blog but I do follow it. Today I'll come out of the closet and comment! I'd hate to go back to a desktop. I have one but almost never use it. It'd be like not having a cordless phone. Take it to the kitchen for recipes, to the recliner for laziness, to bed when under the weather, etc. I helped my Mom shop for one 2 months ago. We got one that would do everything you'd need unless you're a big business. Got it "out of the box" at Best Buy for $399. You know they get out of date so quick that there is no need to pay for lots of fancy buttons. Hope this is useful!
Laptop all the way...takes up less space and you can take it with if need be.
We have 2 desktops so it's all I use but when we go to my parents, we use their laptop(s) and I like them because they're portable but otherwise my desktop is A-OK with me!
laptop... and a mac at that!
Mac, yay! It's worth every extra penny, imo.
But, really, Jen, who cares if you're hopelessly outdated because you stick to your desktop? (Just get a Mac Desktop, heh heh heh) As long as it works for you.
But I love my laptop for more reasons than that I couldn't carry a desktop around with me... for one, it's lots more comfortable typing sprawled on the couch with computer (you guessed it) on my lap; than sitting at any desk every invented. And yeah - kitchen with recipes, etc etc.
We have a desktop that is outdated and in the basement. We'd really like to get a laptop as it is so handy to sit anywhere with (as others have mentioned).
There are a lot of computer geeks out there to help you. Justin is a whiz at them if you have questions about the best etc. He had two laptops but just bought parts to "build" a desktop. He loves anything to do with computers and is really helpful. Myrna
By the way I read your blog all the time, I just don't comment much. :)
We have two laptops and two desktops one is a dinasaur downstairs strictly for photo ltrs etc. My boss just bought my laptop to take to schools for pics, got it at radio shack for 599 with a 100 rebate. Its ok, our other laptop is a dell built online for our business. It was a bit more expensive, but Roger loves to sit in the recliner to draw the kitchens and baths on it. Brayden uses the desktop and I use it too when I do the books for the 10 key pad. Mostly he uses it now. The newest laptop even has a webcam built into the lid and it was the cheap one. Overall, I would pick the laptop, we take it everywhere. We got the first one off ebay before our trip to russia for Brayden. They travel well and make communication easier. Good luck choosing, but I would recommend going online with dell and build your own, just see what it would cost and then look on ebay too. Loved the thought provoking two posts you had here!! Both were good for me, one more spiritual the other just natural thoughts. :-) Take care!! Was good to see you the other day altho we didn't chat!
We have a desktop and a laptop. We never touch the desktop anymore. So nice to take the laptop andywhere in the house and use it. It's great to look up a recipe and then bring it in the kitchen and follow along. (yes a person could print it but that's to easy!) Also, great for travel. When I get the pics off the desktop we are junking it and getting another laptop.
We have a laptop and desktop. The desktop is in dire need of replacing. So this is helpful for me too! I think I am going to go with another desktop. I love my laptop a lot and use it most b/c it is sooo handy. But for some of the work I do on the computer, I want the big keyboard etc. And I just bought a flat screen monitor not too long ago for my desktop. So it makes sense for me to get another desktop. All I would have to get is the tower. But otherwise I would suggest a laptop...they are so handy...too handy at times! I'll be checking back to see what everyone else says. Let us know what you decide.
These comments really are interesting! I often would like one in the kitchen. I much prefer the larger/free keyboard of my PC tho. I suppose If I had to have only one or the other, I WOULD choose the laptop, for a few other conveniences. I also have the issues of kids tho, and would prefer that it (computer) and kids are stationary! I'd have big problems, never being able to find either one of them!! Now, if I only had "2" "responsible, obedient...." children, it might be different!! LOL!!!!!!!!
laptop- I thought Shaun was crazy when he wanted one but we hardly ever use the desktop anymore.
Laptop if you're mobile and DON'T have children...desk tops are less vulnerable to damage. Have fun! :) LW
Dude... they have these cool desktop computers now where the hard drive is actually in the monitor rather than being a separate piece of equipment. I am secretly coveting them... Mac or PC. I wouldn't be picky. They look so slick cuz they don't have cords going all every which way all over the place!
My suggestion is that you get a fairly small laptop with a docking station. That way you can have the big flat screen monitor with the nice keyboard and mouse when you want by using your docking station, but then you can undock when you want the computer to become mobile. Just FYI, my personal computer is a desktop, and my work computer is a laptop. If I didn't have my work laptop, I probably would have done my docking station suggestion long ago. Another tip: If you have a docking station with a monitor, you can use your monitor and your laptop screen to operate with "dual screens". It sounds unnecessary at first, but it's great when you want to compare stuff, etc. I have two monitors at work - it's the best.
Jen, I'm wondering what you have decided on for a new computer. I am in the same prediciment. I am 75% inclined to get a new desktop and 25% inclined to get a laptop. It looks like the comments here pretty much encourage getting the laptop. Linda
Linda, I'm still debating. But I do know that if I go with a laptop, I'll go with an Hp. I've been hearing that Dell laptops are NOT the way to go. However, I've had a Dell desktop for the last five years and it has treated me VERY well, so if I went with a desktop, I'd go that route. In addition to all of that, though, I'm finding that laptops are not much different in price than desktops, so I might go with a laptop for that reason alone!
Whew! All of these decisions!! :) I'm sure that I didn't help you out much at all! Wish that I had more of a solid answer for you!! The whole purchasing a new computer thing has been put on the back burner for awhile now. Maybe until next summer.
